To Read or Not To Read These 10 Books

I’m Not Sure I Want to Read…
1. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
I usually don’t like to tell people that I’ve never read any of the Harry Potter books because I usually get threatened when I spill the beans. I will also confess to never watching any of the movies. Please don’t hurt me! Sci-fi just isn’t my thing. I thought I had completely written this series off as a loss until I saw them in audio format last week. For some reason listening to it on audio doesn’t seem as intimidating or time-consuming as reading a hard copy.
2. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
I once read a book whose main character was obsessed with Wuthering Heights. Because she loved it, I desperately wanted to give it a try but I’m not a big fan of classic novels. I find the contemporary stuff much more interesting and relevant.
3. Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
My brother won’t stop recommending this book to me. His recommendations are typically solid (except when he recommended I read Around the World in Eighty Days). I want to read it but there are so many more books ahead of this one.
4. Marbury Lens by Andrew Smith
After reading Grasshopper Jungle and Winger, I fell in love with Andrew. Yes, we’re on a first name basis now. While I want to ingest every book he’s written, I am weary to read this one because it has a pretty low rating on Goodreads and I have found Goodreads’ ratings fairly accurate.
5. Fever by Laurie Halse Anderson
I got this book before Laurie Halse Anderson was big. In fact, I wasn’t big either…I was only in elementary school. For some reason or another, I didn’t read it then and I still haven’t read it now. It’s still sitting on my shelf for when I am ready though!
6. Fifty Shades Darker by E. L. James
I just finished Fifty Shades of Grey because, well, I just had to see what the hype was about. And I hated it. But I’m still intrigued. It’s a weird combination of emotions. Maybe I’ll just wait for the movie to come out.
7. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
Love, love, love this movie and, although the book isn’t the same, I would bet you it’s just as good. Besides, the movie plot is so involved I would probably understand more if I took the time to read it. IF I took the time to read it.
8. Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell
It was so much fun to read Fangirl by Rainbow because it takes place in Nebraska. I enjoyed the characters and the writing and I see Eleanor and Park on so many must-read lists. I just haven’t picked it up and I’m not sure what’s stopping me.
9. The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien
Again with the sci-fi problem…I want to know why everyone thinks it’s so good but, I also don’t want to waste my time reading books I probably won’t enjoy.
10. Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
Frankly my dear, this book is just too damned big. But I want to read it. But it’s so big! But I’d look legit carrying around a copy of it. But it would be too heavy! But it’s a classic! But where to find the time? Oh, the struggle.
You should pick Eleanor and Park. I loved it, although I liked fangirl more.

Harry Potter on audio is a HUGE yes! I’ve listened to them multiple times on audio just because I love the narrator so much and they’re nice comfort reads. My favorite is the 3rd book, HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I also liked Fangirl more than Eleanor & Park (those kids cry too much!), but I think E&P is well worth the read. I encourage you never to read Gone with the Wind. Racist, offensive, and really kind of silly–though I fell for it big time when I was 13. But what did I know?! I was just reading something somewhere about a new book from Andrew. (I’ll stick with first names, since you’re on that first-name basis.) Will try to find it…

I feel the same about Gone with the Wind… I started it years ago and never got farther than a few chapters in. Maybe I’ll pick it up again! Thanks for sharing!

Oh Kelsey! I guess my age is showing, but I loved “Gone With the Wind”, “the Lord of the Rings”, “Wuthering Heights” and even “The Count Of Monte Cristo”! It might have something to do with living on an isolated farm and with a good library I visited when my little bro was seriously ill and the library was 1 block from the dr.s office, and probably my life ling romance with the written word. I personally live a ling book when it is a good one! My perennial favorite author and series is Dorothy Dunnett and her Lymond series beginning with “Kings Play”. Ask Libby, I always have a book to recommend!!!
There are so many books I wish I could read and I often wonder if they’ll forever be on my to-read list. I wish life gave us more time to explore our romance with the written word! I’ll definitely have to read some Dunnett. Thanks for the recommendation, Kathy!
