This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki and Jillina Tamaki
Flight 8 by Kazu Kibuishi
The Maze Runner by James Dashner
This week in young-adult book club we read The Maze Runner. And I hated it. While I thought the characters were flat and the plotline was uninteresting, my roommate borrowed it and absolutely loved it! And she’s not the only one; my brother (a 15-year-old sophisticated reader) also adored the book.
Nearly everyone in book club shared my feelings. They hated it, too. We discussed why this book in particular attracts reluctant readers and what the mega craze is about. We were also puzzled with the highly above-average rating on Goodreads. Needless to say, despite hating the book, I can’t WAIT to see the movie!
Even so, I still want to read The Maze Runner…

Yes! I say read it. A lot of people really enjoy it.
OMFG WHO DOESN’T LIKE THE MAZE RUNNER??
I didn’t particularly care for the Maze Runner either, but I had lots of students who devoured the whole series. I feel like I’m still waiting for some reason behind it all. I wasn’t satisfied with the answers given.
I had such high expectations for it because the movie trailer looks so great. However I’m glad I’m not the only one that felt disappointed.
The Maze Runner was another one of those “meh” books for me. I keep telling students that the NEXT Hunger Games/Divergent/Maze Runner book will be Delaney’s Revenge of the Witch, since the movie comes out in February. I’ve long been a fan– we’ll see if I’m right!
I guess I’ll be reading Revenge of the Witch before February then! Thanks for the recommendation.
So glad you loved This One Summer! I keep thinking about it. Really want to read and discuss in our YA book club because I think there is so much to talk about. Wasn’t the art gorgeous?
Yes! It was beautifully crafted. We should talk about it in book club…it doesn’t take long to read. Maggie has it right now.
